Three South Florida schools (Deerfield Beach Middle School, Mandarin Lakes K-8 Academy in Homestead and SunCoast Community High School in Riviera Beach) have received solar panels from FPL Group Foundation. This way the schools will start saving money and teaching students about renewable energy.

The solar panels are manufactured by SunPower Corp and will produce 5 kilowatts of electricity to power lights and the air conditioning system, saving more than $800 each year.

Deerfield Beach students have the possibility to monitor how much electricity the panels generate each hour on SunPower’s website. As part of the project, the Florida Solar Energy Center will provide free lessons about alternative energy to the students. Here’s a short video produced by FPL about the ceremony form last week where the students started the school year with the panels.
