The first solar-powered air conditioner that can also send energy to the grid has rolled off the production line of China’s largest residential air-conditioner manufacturer Gree Electric Appliances.

According to company sources, the first 50,000 units will be available for purchase in the American market, with subsequent distribution for sale in China.

Chief engineer of Gree Electric Appliances, Huang Hui, stated that the air conditioning device is mainly powered by solar energy, using traditional electricity only if solar power is insufficient. China offers a potential market growth for the model, being at the same time a big producer and consumer of solar-powered air conditioners.

Hui also mentioned that the model should become quite popular in the US due to government’s support of the efforts of sending the excess solar energy to local power grids. The production of the second-generation of the model will start in January 2011 and will run on 100% solar energy.
