Arizona is about to become one of the leaders in the solar energy sector. A few days ago, the SunPower Corporation announced a collaboration with Iberdrola Renewables to develop a giant photovoltaic solar power plant in Pinal County, Arizona, known as Copper Crossing.

According to the company, the plant will produce 20 MW of clean energy. Construction works started earlier this month and the entire facility will occupy 144 acres of former private agricultural land in Pinal County. The project is expected to create about 200 jobs during construction.

When Copper Crossing will go online, Iberdrola Renewables will be the company that will own and operate the plant. The Salt River Project, a Phoenix-based public utility, has recently signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the energy produced at the plant.

At the base of the project will stand the SunPower Oasis Power Plant module, a modular solar power block engineered to cost-effectively deploy utility-scale solar projects while optimizing land use. As the company said, the facility will be ready sometime during 2011.
