The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has recently unveiled country’s first electric car, entering the EV industry. Called SKEV 1 (Signal Custom Electric Vehicle 1), the car is an improved version of the 1992 Honda Genio.

The body was modified by Signal Kustom while the electric motor was designed by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Abdul Hapid, one of the LIPI team members claims that the lithium batteries are nanotechnology-enabled. Unlike conventional batteries where charging time is about six to ten hours, this type of battery can be charged in only one hour.

“While LIPI only concentrates on technology and less on design concepts. So, we refine concepts of a more futuristic designs,” Andre Mulyadi of Signal Kustom added.

Fully charged, the SKEV 1 is capable of reaching a top speed of 125 mph and generating 156 horsepower. The car also has an indicator on the dashboard to display the distance that can be traveled with the remaining battery charge. Besides this, it is designed with a “regenerative braking system” (now a standard in such cars) which allows the vehicle to automatically recover some of its battery charge from by braking the vehicle when needed.
