Carbon Reduction Must Improve Six-Fold Annually Until 2050, says PwC

To prevent the dangerous consequences of climate change from happening, about 200 nations have acquiesced in 2010’s United Nation climate talk to limit the global temperature rise to less than 2oC.

For this to be achievable within the century, a six-fold improvement in reduction of carbon emissions must be implemented from now on until 2050, according to the annual report on Low Carbon Economy Index of PwC.

The global temperature has already risen by 0.8oC above pre-industrial time, and climate scientists have warned that the possibility of limiting its increase is declining that the only hope remaining is to increase carbon emission reduction rate from 0.8% to 5.1% a year starting this year until 2050 to have 50% probability of achieving the less-than-2oC global temperature rise goal.

Even though there have been promises by major companies to reduce carbon emissions, the report says these pledges would not suffice to meet the ultimate goal as the progress in carbon reduction has been slow.

According to the report, European Union countries had the highest rates of carbon reduction with Britain, France and Germany all cutting carbon intensity by over 6 percent in 2010-2011. Australia has also increased its carbon reduction by 6.7% last year, but other countries ranged from 0.8% to 3.5% only.
