Home-made gadgets are always cool to look at, but wait till you see this solar-powered tricycle near you sometime in the next five years.

I wanted to start off with the classic Star Trek opening line, “Space… the Final Frontier…” but then the allusions started to fail me. You know what, this is epic, and we’re gonna do it anyway. “These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” – Captain James Tiberius Kirk.

Recently-retired from Shenyang, China, Captain Li Linxiang and his wife [First Mate], Zhao Yafan, are going to go where no solar-powered tricycle has gone before. Their starship is a home-built solar-powered tricycle, which they plan on taking on a five-year mission around the world. Well, they can’t actually drive all the way around the world, but their bold plan is to visit some 100 countries over the next five years, driving their solar-powered tricycle the whole way.

The first leg of their journey began in Shenyang, China in May, and they have been touring China for the last month. They’ll pass through to Kazakhstan and parts of the Middle East to spend the Winter in Ethiopia. After that, they plan to tour Europe via Turkey and then head back to North Africa. After a quick jaunt to the United States and Canada, they’ll fly back to Korea and then back home.
