Learning doesn’t have to be all work and no play. Even learning about caring for the environment can be fun if it’s structured properly and you’re driving a brand new 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid.

Recently, we covered an online game being run by Siemens, the Power Matrix Game, that helps players to understand how their power management choices affect, not only their bottom line, but also the environment. It’s an interesting approach to helping people get a feel for how our energy choices make a difference, one way or another.

When it comes to cars and the environment, the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid is one of the most well-known. It’s rated at 95mpge/50mpg which, if managed correctly, could save thousands in refueling costs. Of course, management is the key to making the most of that 95mpge. The Prius Plug-in has an EV mode of just 11mi, after which you’ll get 50mpg average. Owners of another well-known electric vehicle report getting real-world fuel economy around 10,000mpg!

How about we put that to the test in a Prius Plug-In, thinks Toyota. Thanks to the Toyota Prius Plug-In MPG Challenge, the games are on! Open to environmentally-conscious charity organization in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut region, the Challenge will see just how well the participants can manage their fuel economy.

Partipants, including The Greyston Foundation, Bloomfield College, and The Helping Hands Food Pantry, among others, will have thirty days to prove just how fuel-conscious they are when they drive the 2013 Toyota Prius Plug-In. Over the month of the challenge, participants need to drive at least 75mi/wk. At the end, whoever has the highest overall MPG according to the trip computer will win a $2,500 contribution. Second Place wins $1,000 and Third Place wins $500. Additionally, all participants receive a $200 gas card. There will be five waves of competition, which started in June, so prospective participants should check out the press release for more information.
