Tesla Model X Expected to Enter Production Late 2014

Tesla Motors hasn’t ceased to impress, ever since the launch of the Tesla Roadster, and current production of the Tesla Model S and news of future models, rumored to include the Tesla Model X, C, and R.

Originally, it was thought that the Tesla Model X was to launch this year, but we were dismayed to hear that it had been put on the back burner in favor of other things.

Holding off on Model X development has been good for the rest of the business, such as expanding manufacturing facilities and ramping up production to meet the demand for the Model S. Tesla Motors has recently launched in the EU and even looks to be opening a Tesla Store in China.

The Tesla Model X concept has been simmering quietly on the back burner, but it could finally be ready for some more stirring. Tesla Motors spokeswoman Shanna Hendriks told Bloomberg News that “Model X will begin production at the end of 2014. We are currently working on prototype vehicles.”

The Tesla Model X crossover will feature a powertrain similar to the Model S, but with a couple of available variations. The basic model will be fitted with a single electric motor in the rear, but it is also expected to come in a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version, as well. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version will come in standard and performance levels. All three variations are expected to use the same lithium-ion battery packs in 60kWh or 85kWh capacities.

Perhaps the most alluring feature of the Tesla Model X is it’s “Falcon Wing” doors, reminiscent of Delorean. Back to the Future, anyone? While the Delorean, of Back to the Future fame, that is, was eventually outfitted with a Mr. Fusion portable nuclear power plant, it was still a hybrid, requiring gasoline to get around under 88mph. The Tesla Model X really will be the future, powered by up to 85kWh of pure lithium-ion battery power.
