dut12-racing-electric-carOnce more in the history of racing, a “homemade” electric car developed by Dutch students at the Delft University of Technology has managed to break acceleration records.

2.15 seconds is the 0 to 60 MPH time that the team got from their electric race car resembling the 500 hp Ariel Atom V8, which is 0.15 slower. Well, you may say, that’s not by much, but it’s nevertheless impressive what these guys did from cheap parts and their spare time.

“We thought that under these conditions we’d be happy with 2.30,” team manager Tim de Moree said. “But we really didn’t expect 2.15.”

You’ll also think their electric sportscar had at least 400 horsepower – not true. The stunning performance is only outputted by a 135 hp electric motor, which propelled 320-pound car (uninspiringly nicknamed DUT12 – they could’ve thought of something nicer). They also assigned their lightest member of their team to drive it.

The power of homemade stuff and crowdfunding is starting to grow stronger each year. Starting with converted EVs, 3D printers and now purebred electric cars, people all over the world are starting a new revolution right in their backyards and improvised labs, showing big corporations that everything’s possible. And I think the economic crisis has something to do with this – in fact, this is one of its few good side-effects.
