Coming Soon! Green Car Journal will name the winner of the 2014 Green Car Technology of the Year Award. In just a few short weeks, one of ten nominees will be announced at the 2014 Washington Auto Show, and we’ve been considering the prospects.

So far, we’ve covered some pretty impressive green car technology, including the Acura Sport Hybrid Powertrain, Audi 3.0ℓ TDI Engine, BMW CFRP Safety Cell, and Cadillac ELR Regen-On-Demand. All of these technologies offer something new in the field of fuel economy and emissions-reduction. More importantly, these kind of technologies are accessible to the masses, which makes their impact much wider. Today, we’re going to take a look at the Ford 1.0ℓ EcoBoost Engine.

The green car prejudice could very well be broken by the Ford 1.0ℓ EcoBoost engine. Featuring just three cylinders and a measly 1.0ℓ displacement, you might relegate this engine, and the vehicle it is installed in, to the realm of “cute but undesirable.” Such a tiny engine would certainly deliver impressive fuel economy, but could it possibly be fun to drive? Won’t you get creamed trying to merge onto a busy highway?

The Ford Fiesta gets around that by installing a turbocharger, which adds additional power when you need it, such as accelerating onto a busy highway, but cuts out once you’re at cruising speed. Having a big engine gives you power, too, but what good is that once you’re cruising? The Ford 1.0ℓ EcoBoost generates up to 123hp for spirited acceleration but, at the same time, delivers an EPA-estimated 45mpg highway. This thoughtful combination of technologies makes for a truly accessible green car.
