Now, this is actually doctors’ recommended, and their advice is based on numerous scientific studies. All point out that urban green space not only cleans the air, but also reduces stress, depression and calms people down. In addition, urban parks are the cheapest and most pleasant gym that you could ever join.

During the Green City conference, held in London on the 1st of April, organized by the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) Green City Committee, doctors, scientists and experts explained the benefits and demonstrated the influence that urban gardens and green spaces have on human health. Examples were given from all around the world, emphasizing on the importance of the issue.

Among the popular talks, one triggered a particular interest. That was given Sir Richard Thompson, President of the UK’s Royal College of Physicians, who presented the scientific proof that plants, gardening and green areas in urban environments play a crucial role in maintaining human well-being. He also presented studies that show how gardens and plants in closed places, such as hospitals, significantly reduced the stress levels and overall mood not only of the patients, but also staff and families.

He also points out that only a green lawn is not sufficient. The variation in plant species is just as important as the space itself. The health benefit begins only by getting out in the park. Not only that the air is fresher, but the exposure to sunlight is higher, which helps reducing blood pressure, according to other research. And above all, it is as if there is an open gym right outside the house- free and much more pleasant.

Sir Thompson is certain that investing in urban green will actually benefit the national health system and cut down on expenses that would otherwise go towards preventing medicine.
