In a move we wish was satirical, influential chairman of Australia’s Business Advisory Council claimed that climate science is filled with “dud predictions.”
Maurice Newman, disregarding all the actual science behind climate change stated ”The real agenda is concentrated political authority. Global warming is the hook. It’s about a new world order under the control of the UN.”
That’s right, the Australian Prime Minister is being told that climate change is a conspiracy theory by the United Nations in a wacky ploy to gain world domination. Unfortunately for the world Tony Abbott, Australia’s Prime Minister claimed that climate change science was “crap” back in 2009. This is particularly worrying as Australia’s per capita emissions are the highest in the OECD and among the highest in the world.
In an editorial piece for The Australian newspaper, Newman made a number of incorrect statements, including that “95 percent of the climate models we are told prove the link between human CO2 emissions and catastrophic global warming have been found, after nearly two decades of temperature stasis, to be in error.”
As most (if not all) of The Green Optimistic readers are aware Earth is absolutely not in a period of temperature stasis, with temps having continued to rise over the past 20 years. Nine out of ten of the hottest years since record keeping began have occurred since the year 2000, with 2014 being the warmest year on record.
Even if Newman hasn’t read all these sciencey reports, all he has to do is talk to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. In 2013 they needed to add a new color heat maps because areas are reaching over 125°F (52°C).
It would be funny if it wasn’t so depressing.

Ever notice climate change deniers are intimately associated with the sales and politics of hydrocarbon fuels? In this case it’s coal sales to Asia by Australia which exports 73% of its coal. Australia could care less about the Planet while the coal money keeps rolling in and they can keep selling carbon dirt to the “suckers.”
The press must not let the “no warming in 15 years” line go unchallenged. It’s not just that a hotter than average year was picked by deniers as the start of this period of atmospheric temps. More importantly, the extra heat has gone into the oceans. Taking the planet as a WHOLE system – as it is – the earth is still warming, be it in atmospheric or oceanic temperatures. But deniers don’t want to understand that and it’s called “willful ignorance.” Shame on them.
Shocking. If the hiatus (lack of global warming) had ended, I think we ALL would have heard about it. Scare tactics by extremists would be funny if it weren’t so sad.
