torq-roadsterIn recent times when electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and the Tesla Model S have become so popular, no of these electric vehicles have focussed on offering anything like Formula One performance. But that is all set to change with California-based Epic EV’s TORQ Roadster offering just that.

Featuring a 400 horsepower electric engine that enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just four seconds, and take corners easily with One G of lateral force, the TORQ Roadster has the specifications to match the Formula One claim, even though it has only three wheels. The manufacturers Epic EV can therefore claim that the Roadster is the fastest ever electric car.

The Roadster’s constant and smooth acceleration as well as its 400 horsepower engine are managed with Formula One technology-based brakes, suspension and chassis. The car is also kept light and rigid with carbon fibre used for its exterior. The main aim of such a car, according to Epic EV is to demonstrate that customers do not have to trade in energy efficiency for superior handling and performance.

The launch date for the TORQ Roadster is expected to be on April 6 with a price tag of $65,000 for the US market and €50,000 for the European market. Epic EV will however build only 50 models this year, as demand is expected to be higher than supply. A 2014 waiting list has therefore been set up for anyone willing to deposit $5,000 to join.

The fact that the TORQ Roadster does not have a roof might not appeal so much to European customers due to their weather conditions. However, in areas like California where driving without a roof is commonplace, as well as with people in the market for a sports car that stands out from the rest, the TORQ Roadster will prove to be a popular choice.
