More Bioethanol (10%) in UK Petrol – Govt Consultation in Progress

The UK Department for Transport has started a consultation regarding the E10 fuel. The goal is to figure out whether and how it should introduce the fuel. Since it contains more bioethanol, it will help the reduction of carbon emissions from petrol cars. Consequently, it will help the UK to meet its climate change targets.

Transport Minister Jesse Norman, said, “This Government is ambitiously seeking to reduce the UK’s reliance on imported fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions from transport. But drivers of older vehicles should not be hit hard in the pocket as a result.”

One of the major reasons for that consultation is to understand the impact of the E10 fuel on the market.

Earlier this year, the government announced changes to the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO) that will require fuel suppliers to increase the amount of renewable fuel supplied across the UK by 2032.

Therefore, they could have an option to increase the percentage of bioethanol up to 10 percent (E10 fuel).

Using this fuel can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2 percent. However, the trouble is that around 1 million cars in the UK cannot use it.

Additionally, the consultation will include proposals on new fuel labels at gas stations. It is believed to help the drivers in selecting the right fuel.

The government consultation will seek views on:

  • Whether and how to introduce E10 petrol in the UK
  • The reintroduction of an E5 protection grade to ensure standard petrol remains available at an affordable price
  • The introduction of new fuel labeling at petrol pumps and on new cars

This policy is very important in the context of the Road to Zero strategy, that will try to achieve zero emissions in the near future.

The consultations will close on September 16, 2018.
