Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, just like hybrid electric vehicles and conventional vehicles, would require refueling stations, but aren’t they too expensive to build? Like all vehicles on the road today, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles store their fuel onboard, but needs to get that fuel from somewhere else. Some have asked, much like the chicken-and-the-egg conundrum, […]

While hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and infrastructure seem to be an oddity outside Japan, the Japan Ministry of Economy is working hard to improve its chances. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCV), like electric vehicles (EV), produce no emissions on their own. Pressurized hydrogen gas, stored in an on-board tank, is fed into the hydrogen fuel […]

Leftover ash from power production often finds its way to landfills or, in some countries, as a construction material. It can’t be stored inside though, because the leftover ash […]

According to the US Department of Energy, natural gas pipelines are an ideal way to distribute natural gas, even blended with hydrogen. Actually, blending hydrogen and natural gas is nothing new, and dates back to the mid-1800s. The adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles seems to be hinging on the development of the infrastructure to fuel […]

Major automobile manufacturers have had hydrogen [H2] fuel cell [HFC] vehicles in research and development for years, but they always seems to be on the back burner. There are some major hurdles to widespread use of HFCs, which have held them back from the mainstream. Primarily, there is little to no infrastructure for refueling them. […]

A large scale partnership called H2I (Hawaii Hydrogen Initiative) is coming together as combined efforts are being made for the fueling infrastructure that will support the future face of the Hawaiian transportation system. Hydrogen fuel is the word of the day, as Hawaii expects thousands of fuel-cell vehicles to hit the market starting with 2015.

I was glad when I read an article last night describing how Norway opened up a 560 km "hydrogen highway", and inaugurated it with a hydrogen car rally between Oslo and a North Sea oil hub, Stavanger. The cars were regular Ford Focuses, Priuses, and other well-known, converted either into burning hydrogen directly in their classic internal combustion engine, or using fuel cells to convert hydrogen to electricity (probably the case of the Prius).
