Airborne Laser Scan Shows New York Rooftops Could Generate 5,847 MW of Solar Power

Special planes equipped with a special laser system called Lidar flew over New York last year and scanned all the potential rooftops out of more than one million on which solar panels could be installed to properly produce power, NYTimes reports.

SolarCity Receives $280 Million Investment From Google For Solar Panel Leasing Program

SolarCity, the company founded by Elon Musk (who also created Tesla Motors, Paypal) has just received $280 million from Google. The investment is one of the largest in solar power worldwide, and aims to help 7,000 to 9,000 homeowners in the 10 states where SolarCity operates install solar panels onto their rooftops.

As you may already know, solar panels are great, but they have one big drawback: if as little as one shadow covers one of the cells, the entire power output slumps. Not to mention that if one of the cells themselves brakes down, the whole system crashes. To hear of such sensitivity in a technology of the future is rather disappointing, but TenKsolar can take up the challenge and solve these issues.

Pakistan is catching up on its enormous solar energy potential pretty soon: in less than a year, the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) will build the country's first on-grid solar electricity system.
