fpl-desoto_1_PYQzs_69The company Florida Power & Light has announced that its project called DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Arcadia, Florida, will be finalized soon and should be generating electric energy by the end of this month.

This new solar power plant is expected to generate about 110MW of electric energy, being comprised of 90,000 photovoltaic panels, being able to power more than 3,000 homes. According to the company it will make Florida the second largest solar power-producing state in the country and will become the nation’s largest PV power plant facility.

During the construction, the facility has created in DeSoto County more than 400 jobs. The county will also receive annual tax revenues that will amount up to $2 million for schools and other local services by the end of 2010.

The solar power plant also provides significant environmental benefits because it uses no water, produces no waste and consumes no fuel. Over the life of the plant, the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center will avoid the release of more than 575,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, which is equivalent to taking more than 4,500 cars off the road every year.
