Saudi Arabia solar powerThe president of Saudi Aramco, Khalid A. Al-Falih recently inaugurated a 3.5 MW solar field. The project in Riyadh is for the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC).

Estimated to be capable of providing 5,800 MW of electricity to be used to supplement the grid, the solar field covers an area of 55,000 square miles, representing the largest such installation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The solar field’s panels which consist of 12,684 fixed-angle polycrystalline PV panels are produced by Suntech, a household name in global solar panel production. The field will also provide enough energy to offset nearly 5000 tonnes of carbon emissions yearly.

This announcement represents the current trend for the Kingdom as last year, the region was labelled the next to witness a solar market boom. Later that year, Prince Turki Al Faisal Al Saud, one of the representatives of the state envisioned a low carbon-powered Kingdom in his lifetime, saying that, to them, oil would be more useful for making other things apart from as fuel, and that it would be more beneficial to the world to have alternative sources of energy.

Following that pronouncement, the state also unveiled investment plans worth $109 billion for the solar energy industry, so that their aim of generating a third of the state’s electricity by 2032 can be met. Thus, in view of the fact that the state has such rich fossil fuel reserves, changing its focus towards renewable energy represents a remarkable move, especially if sustained.
