However, the health issues surrounding healthy eating become more and more critical and adds another dimension to food management.

It can feel overwhelming to navigate through a busy day, only to come home and find you have to spend a significant amount of time deciding what to eat, taking into account both your body and for the environment. Humans actually only have a certain amount of brainpower for making decisions throughout the day. Too many leads to something called “decision fatigue“, and that can make a seemingly simple decision like what to eat for dinner seem somehow impossible.

If you’re wondering how to reduce food waste (and financial waste!), the perfect app will be available by the end of 2015. As TreeHugger reports, the app can track the food that you have, warn you when perishable items are about to go bad, and make recipe suggestions that are both simple and use the food that you already have.

The app was created by Brianna McGuire, who hopes to save the 20 pounds of food that each American typically tosses during an average month.

Foodfully can track your groceries in several different ways; the app can be linked to a grocery store’s loyalty program cards and Instacart accounts, but users can also scan their grocery receipts or enter their purchases manually. The app uses a database that understands the average life of foods and alerts the user every two or three days.

Current beta testing of the app indicates that it could reduce food waste by up to 50%.
