General Motors and OnStar plans to create a smart-grid pilot in order to increase the energy efficiency and reduce the charging costs for Chevy Volts around.

The new smart-grid EV program will help utilities to directly control EV charging for participating consumers. This way, the utility can then reduce peak loads by offering discounts or other incentives to encourage drivers to charge their electric vehicles when overall electricity demand is low.

The automaker believes that the new program will convince hundreds of utility workers to lease Chevrolet Volt vehicles in order to drive them to work every day. The period when the electricity is the lowest is in the early morning hours.

“In contrast to other OEMs who are only talking about smart-grid technology, we’re moving beyond research and development projects to a program in the real world. Through this pilot we will see real-time results on how intelligent energy management can maximize EV charging efficiency and minimize the electric bill for EV drivers,” Nick Pudar, OnStar vice president of planning and business development said in a press release.
