Thinergy’s New Batteries Redefine The Realm of Recharging

Today’s society is heading towards being a more mobile, technology-driven one. The market has been demanding smaller and thinner portable electronics, and manufacturers were able to produce thinner gadgets for its consumers. Now, with Infinite Power Solutions’ (IPS) breakthrough, manufacturers may be able to achieve the thinnest gadgets that we could ever possibly imagine.

IPS of Littleton, Colorado has just paved the way towards an infinite energy source by developing THINERGY® Micro-Energy Cells (MECs). These MECs are paper-thin and flexible and provide unrivaled cycle life and power performance. The average rechargeable battery is only capable of about 300-1000 deep discharge cycles.

IPS implemented a unique battery architecture and uses trade secret processes to achieve superior life cycle performance. IPS’ THINERGY MECs can be recharged beyond 100,000 cycles, making them perfect for constant recharge applications. Re-charge takes only a few seconds to a few minutes; and there is no “memory-effect,” so a full discharge and recharge is not necessary to prolong the capacity life of the battery.

THINERGY uses a lithium ion battery technology, which is used in most portable electronics. These unrivaled MECs boasts of a paper thin thickness of 0.17 mm. Able to operate in temperatures ranging from -40ºC to +85ºC, these MECs also offer extremely low self discharge rates, low cell resistance and high power. THINERGY MECs are ideally suited for use with all forms of ambient energy harvesting techniques for recharging–such as solar, thermal, RF, magnetic and vibration energy–delivering safe, reusable and clean power source.

Charging Methods

The batteries can be recharged in different ways including: Infrastructure/Direct wire re-charge, Inductive re-charge, and Energy Harvesting solutions such as photovoltaic, RF, kinetic, thermoelectric. The energy harvesting solutions provide a continuous and autonomous energy source that may provide a sufficient trickle charge to the battery such that the conventional direct wire recharge may never be necessary, allowing decades of power without battery replacement!

Applications

The IPS batteries can serve as a storage device for energy collected from a solar cell. Since these batteries have a low self discharge rate, they can store energy for long periods of time without major loss of the energy used to charge it. The thickness of the batteries allow them to be built into flat components like the RFID tags and smart cards. As RIFD tags and smart cards become more complex and smarter, battery requirements need to keep up. They are also being built into implanted medical devices and wireless sensors.

The technology, however, is still inapplicable for use with cell phones, tablets, music players and such. These batteries can only provide a range of 0.13 – 2.2 mAH depending on the model, and it can provide a maximum continuous current of 7 – 100 mA. For now, it can only be used in special applications such as the above mentioned. Nevertheless, this is a big leap towards infinite and green energy.
