Part of electric vehicle ownership is installing your own refueling station, an electric vehicle charging station, that is.

When you look at the overall costs of running an electric vehicle, it’s easy to see how many people could benefit financially by avoiding the gas pump and recharging at home, or even on the go. It’s the up-front costs that are daunting. The electric vehicle itself is more costly by thousands of dollars of an equivalent conventional vehicle, and then there is the electric vehicle charging station.

You may be able to work the price of a charging station into the deal when you purchase your electric vehicle, but we’re still talking about thousands of dollars plus installation. In the case of the Tesla Model S, adding the High Power Wall Connector and Twin Chargers [80A 20kW capacity] will add $2,700 plus installation to your car payment. The Nissan Leaf charger starts at $999, not including installation, and is capable of up to 30A 7.5kW [if my math is correct] charging. This is still somewhat pricey.

Bosch Automotive Service Solutions has released the first electric vehicle charging station available for under $450, which is about half the price of anything else that’s available on the market. The Bosch Power Max 240V charging station is rated at 16A or 30A [4kW or 7.5kW] and has already delivered thousands of them. According to a national laboratory, it is also the most efficient charging station available.
