Looking at the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, or the whole lineup, for that matter, and one can tell that fuel economy is not at the top of the list of major driving factors. However, Mercedes-Benz’s foray into electric vehicles will definitely be driven by environmentally-conscious drivers and emissions regulations.

For example, for Mercedes-Benz to sell to executives in Silicon Valley, California, the company needs to make a certain percentage of low emissions vehicles. Clearly, with an S-Class Coupe, equipped with a 449 horsepower twin-turbo V8, Mercedes-Benz needs to up its game on the ZEV (zero emissions vehicle) front, electric vehicles specifically. The SLS AMG ED is one of those but, with a starting price of $500,000, it isn’t going to be a big seller.

The smaller Mercedes-Benz B-Class ED, powered by a Tesla-Motors-designed electric-vehicle powertrain, is another option that’s going on sale this year in a limited number of states. Still, it’s a small car, so what are emissions-conscious drivers to do if they’re interested in luxury electric vehicles, not particularly Tesla Model S, and aren’t willing to part with the Mercedes-Benz marque?

So far, Mercedes-Benz has released electrified versions of the C-Class and S-Class, but fully electric versions are still forthcoming. The S-Class electric vehicle, according to Mercedes-Benz’s Uwe Ernstberger, an all-electric S-Class is still “in the future.” Still, rumors of a pure electric S-Class have been in the mill for a few years, so it’s anyone’s guess when we might actually see one. Considering that the S-Class ED will most-likely start around $120,000, I’m guessing, it will put this electric vehicle in a class above the Tesla Model S, which would be its closest competitor.
