For China, solar and thermal power are a apparently a killer combination. Together, they form what is called Concentrated Solar Power and that has been topping the priority list of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) for the past year. According to the most recent reports, China is still in the race of achieving 1 GW of green power production in the next 4 years.

In the renewable energy sector, China relies on a five-year plan, that focuses on plain, wide areas, where the sun is shining more intensely than in other areas. This is happening in the context in which photovoltaic solar panels are also trying to steal the show, by making constant progress and cutting down on prices.

However, if the development rhythm of the solar thermal power is going this way, by 2015 it will beat down the PV sector. And that’s not all: China wants to push the solar thermal power to a 3 GW by the next quinquennial.

An important date on the agenda will be the 2nd Annual China Concentrating Solar Power Summit, taking place June 28-29 in Beijing, where all of the involved parties will be discussing the industry’s future: more than 250 officials from government departments, power and energy companies, solar power plants, technology and equipment suppliers, industry solution providers and research institutes. Currently, there are 12 CSP projects still in the planning phase or under way.
