GM to Use Envia’s Breakthrough EV Batteries for 100+ Miles EV Range

Envia Systems is GM’s newest “protegee” in what their interest in EV battery in concerned. Envia has recently announced a breakthrough in a battery that’s as cheap as the ones used nowadays in the Volt and also has a high energy density.

Dan Akerson, GM CEO, said “I think we’ve got better than a 50-50 chance to develop a car that will go to 200 miles on a charge. That would be a game changer.” GM invested $7 in Envia in January 2011.

While GM’s electric flagship Chevrolet Volt is currently able to go only 35 miles on a charge, the battery they envision that they’ll use in a couple of years will go over 100 miles at the same price, outperforming Tesla’s current battery technology. Despite the fact that Tesla’s cars go about 300 miles (and even more) on a charge, they price their electrics at prices that only few can afford.

The Nissan Leaf and the electric version of the Ford Fusion can both go for 100 miles a charge, but that’s relative to the environment temperature and the terrain.

The news has been spread by an AP reporter who participated in a conference call of Dan Akerson with the employees.
