thumb_230_1An electric window shutter, which does not require electric work or power distribution work will soon be released by Sanwa Shutter Corp. It attaches by PV cells to the case of window shutters and it opens and closes only using the electricity generated by the cells.

The amorphous silicon PV cells are 550 x 58 mm, have maximum output of 1W, and the generated electricity is stored in a nickel-metal-hydride rechargeable battery.

To open and close the shutters, about 1.3 Wh are required. In order to provide the additional electricity, the cells should be exposed to direct sunlight for at least 3 hours a day, however it is still functional for up to five days without sun spells.

The price of the shutter, without the installation fee is approximately US $2,399. It is a little pricier than the typical shutter provided by the company, however the energy savings make up for the higher price.
