A new type of power station in London will turn oil and fat, which accumulate in the sewers under the city streets, into electricity.
The station will be located in Beckton, east London, and it will generate enough electricity to serve nearly 3.5 million people in case of emergency. The water company have already agreed to purchase 75 GWh of the output.
In London, there are currently more than 40 workers, who clean the so-called ‘fatbergs’. The city council pays around $1.5 million monthly to prevent or clean blockages.
Besides cooking oil and grease, the fatbergs contain all waste that is accumulated in the sewers. Let’s hope that the project is successful and many other cities follow soon and turn this waste into green power.
