In the fullness of time Jimmy Carter will be seen as the dynamic leader and fantastic human that he is.

Solar power has always been of interest to the former president and he recently completed the construction of a 1.3 megawatt solar power facility in his home town.

Jimmy Carter was unpopular during his presidency, but has done tremendous things ever since. Truly he was a victim of circumstances more than a poor leader.

While in the White House he had a solar array built on the roof, and even had a solar hot water heater installed.

At the time Carter dedicated the solar array with the words, “In the year 2000, this solar water heater behind me, which is being dedicated today, will still be here supplying cheap, efficient energy…. A generation from now, this solar heater can either be a curiosity, a museum piece, an example of a road not taken, or it can be just a small part of one of the greatest and most exciting adventures ever undertaken by the American people,”.

President Reagan had the panels removed and scrapped.

But Jimmy Carter was a visionary, and clearly he saw the inevitability of green progress.

Now that solar power is commercially viable as a source of electricity, the former president is stepping up his game.

Mr. Carter leased 10 acres of land near his hometown of Plains, Georgia.

After partnering up with SolAmerica, he spearheaded the development of a 1.3 megawatt solar farm

It is estimated that it will produce around 55 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year. That is roughly half of the town’s annual power consumption.

“Rosalynn and I are very pleased to be part of SolAmerica’s exciting solar project in Plains,” Mr. Carter wrote, “Distributed, clean energy generation is critical to meeting growing energy needs around the world while fighting the effects of climate change. I am encouraged by the tremendous progress that solar and other clean energy solutions have made in recent years and expect those trends to continue.”

Jimmy Carter has been the recipient of many mean-spirited jabs over the years. But with great acts like this, he continues to show the world just how great a person he is.

Well done sir.
