Toyota Prius Batteries: Not Enough of Them!

Toyota has announced they just don’t have the necessary capacity to produce the batteries they’re required to put in the already ordered Priuses.
The crunch is likely to remain the rest of the year, as battery production can’t be boosted until next year, said Toyota Motor Corp. executive vice-president Takeshi Uchiyamada, who oversees production at Japan’s top automaker.

“Hybrids are selling so well we are doing all we can to increase production,” he told The Associated Press. “We need new lines.”
Toyota already has an agreement with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. to begin producin new generation Li-Ion batteries by 2009, and to move into full-scale production by 2010. They also plan to sell one million hybrid vehicles a year after 2010.
