Nissan Sold More Leaves Than Chevrolet Sold Volts in First Half of 2011

Although I don’t quite see how one can truly compare any gasoline or hybrid car with a pure electric one in terms of market and customer targeting, it looks like the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt have something in common. Nissan’s recent sales reports nevertheless say that the Leaf has outperformed the Volt in the first half of 2011.

So, the numbers are as follows: Nissan sold 3875 Leafs and Chevy only sold 2745. The numbers are nevertheless comparable, but the general trend is that pure electrics seem to have a huge advantage on the market, besides their short range downside: they don’t carry any gas in any tank.

My opinion is that if you want range, CO2-friendliness, low consumption but you’re still a gas or range addict, you should buy a diesel, even a cheap one. But if your heart is after an electric car and you’re a city dweller whose trips are mostly in-town, you shouldn’t buy a hybrid while true electrics exist on the market. I think it’s worth waiting for prices to go down a bit.

This is a totally different situation than was four years ago, when the Prius was the only electrified car available on the mainstream market. Now you have the Leaf and you have the Tesla Roadster, even if you can buy three Leaves off it.

What’s your opinion?
