2013 Tesla Model SStart-up electric vehicle [EV] manufacturer, Tesla Motors, has been working hard to bring to market an EV that is unique and packed with technology. Tesla has gone one better, though, and produced a vehicle that’s attractive and fun to drive, which is sorely lacking in many other EV offerings. For this, Tesla has gained an accolade that not many manufacturers could hope for, especially with their first sedan.

This year, Automobile Magazine named the 2013 Tesla Model S its 2013 Automobile of the Year, which, considering the stiff competition, was no easy feat. In fact, the editors “weren’t expecting much from the Tesla other than some interesting dinner conversation as we considered ‘real’ candidates like the Subaru BRZ and the Porsche Boxster. In fact, the Tesla blew them, and us, away,” writes David Zelnea of Automobile Magazine.

One thing that really set apart the Tesla Model S, at least to get the bad taste of EV out of their minds, was that Tesla didn’t set any limitations on charging times, drive cycles, or maximum speed during the Automobile of the Year testing period. They charged overnight, and with an 85kWh battery pack, the Model S was driven long and hard, which was something that Automobile Magazine’s editors weren’t expecting.

Technological enhancements, of course, received plenty of praise, such as the luxury interior and high-tech dash, as well as the EPA rated 265 miles per charge. What really won over the editors was Tesla Model S’ performance. One of the editors referred to Tesla’s acceleration as “alarming” when considering the nearly silent drive-train delivers more power than the 560 hp BMW M5, which it beat hands-down in an informal drag race.

The Tesla Model S is certainly a sight to behold, and an experience to drive. Packed with an high-tech drive-train capable of amazing performance, as well as a beautifully well-appointed interior, the 2013 Tesla Model S is certainly deserving of Automobile Magazine’s 2013 Automobile of the Year Award.
