Very few people have the vision and business sense to get any invention out of the garage and into production. Nowhere is this more true than the budding electric vehicle market.

Case in point: Tesla Model S and Fisker Karma, an electric vehicle and extended-range electric vehicle, respectively. With its undeniably sexy body and zero range limitations, Fisker Automotive ought to have had a good shot at staying in business against a competitor with obvious limitations like Tesla Motors.

I’m speaking, of course, of the Tesla Model S range limitations and recharge times, of which the Fisker Karma would have neither. Instead, plagued by natural disaster and failed support companies, Fisker Automotive is on the verge of bankruptcy. Tesla Motors, on the other hand, looks to be the most successful electric vehicle startup, period.

BXR Motors, headed up by Neal Bailey, just got funding to complete an plug-in hybrid electric vehicle with some really beautiful lines and an awesome powertrain package. Right now, there are two vehicles in the prototype stage, the Bailey Blade EVR and XTR.

The EVR is equipped with a 2.5ℓ turbocharged i4 and an electric motor that delivers 500lb•ft or torque. With over 500hp total system power and more than 800lb•ft of available torque at 0rpm, the EVR is estimated to have a 0-60mph sprint time of just 4.5s. For those who don’t want the hassle of plugging in, the Blade XTR is to be equipped with a 5.0ℓ supercharged or twin-turbo V8 generating 550hp and 570lb•ft of torque.

Really, the purpose of these prototypes isn’t anything about green, but is a good demonstration of what plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technology can do for a sports car, basically power that puts you in your seat and keeps you there. This ought to be a fun ride while it lasts, but the future is never clear. The Bailey Blade EVR is a truly unique and beautiful prototype, and even though it’s only a one-off right now, could it make it to production or go the way of Fisker Automotive?

Personally, I hope that BXR motors can keep ahead of the game. Can’t wait to see it in action!

  1. I have tried to educate Bailey about EVs but he doesn’t get it. He’s still far too deep into ignorant americana V8 land.
Electric drive is not something you tag on as a limp wristed greenwashing last minute effort. It’s a mindset that permeates everything. Bailey isn’t even on the same planet.

    • DanFrederiksen Unfortunately, it seems like John Q. Public needs to be spoonfed the idea of electric drive. I don’t think a >500hp hybrid electric vehicle is the way to do it.
