Nio EP9 is an all-electric car that set a new record at the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Piloted by Peter Dumbreck, the car completed the hill climb with a time of just 44.61 seconds.
It is not the fastest electric car on this festival: the Volkswagen I.D. R was the one. However, Volkswagen’s project is specifically made for a track use and is not legal to be driven on public roads. The Nio EP9 is a completely road-legal vehicle, which, without any tuning, with exception of using slicks instead standard tires, set up a record for the fastest road-legal car to climb the hill. It has even beaten the McLaren P1 LM’s record time of 47.07 seconds in 2016.
It is not the first record set by the Chinese electric hypercar. In 2017, the car showed itself at the Nürburgring. It finished the lap in just 6:45:90. It is the fastest electric vehicle at this track, and only 3 specially modified race cars have ever done better. They are Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO, McLaren P1 XP1 LM Prototype, and Radical SR8 RX.
The EP9 is powered by four electric motors that combine to generate 1342 horsepower, and it uses four gearboxes. It has a top speed of 194 miles per hour and can accelerate from 0-60 miles per hour in 2.7 seconds and to 124 mph in just 7.1 seconds. The battery is swappable and can be charged in 45 minutes. The maximum range of the car is 265 miles.
Additionally, the car can drive without a human driver. It autonomously finished the Circuit of the Americas in 2:40:33 with a top speed of 160 mph.
However, these numbers cost a lot. And it is not only about the numbers, driving the fastest electric car in the world is an amazing experience. Therefore, if you want to buy one, you will need a lot of luck to find it and $1.5 million to pay for it.
