Just a few days ago, Iberdrola Renewables presented in Atchison County, Missouri, the Farmers City Wind Power Project consisting of 73 turbines that are able to produce 146 megawatts of energy.

Iberdrola Renewables is one of the world’s leading provider of wind power offering more than 10,000 MW of renewable energy globally of which more than 3,500 MW only in the U.S.

The Atchison County wind farm is able to power 33,000 homes and it’s not interfering with corn and soybeans crops. Between the turbines, crops are still grown and harvested, thus contributing to the well-being of the community.

The wind farm is placed on a 14,000 acres land, leased from 44 different landowners. The actual footprint takes only about 1% of that land.  The land owners can continue farming while getting money from the leases. Marlin Logan, the Atchison County Commissioner, has proudly noted that the wind farm has a positive economic impact on the county being also the host of locally produced energy.

The Atchison wind project shows to the world that alternative energy can be a reliable source of power but as well the fact that alternative energy can coexist with day to day activities. Alternative energy is not the enemy of crops, it does not create disasters like oil spills and it does not threaten human heath as fossil fuels do.
