Nissan Launching Cheap and Fast EV Charger to U.S. Market

Nissan is going to introduce their newest and most powerful electric vehicle charger in the U.S.. The fun fact is that, despite its initial price of $9,900, this will be the cheapest EV quick charger in the world, almost three times cheaper than the competitors’.

The new charger will use a 480-volt DC line that can juice up a Nissan Leaf from 0 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes. However, the charger is not the only thing one should be worried about. As a regular Leaf user, you probably won’t be able to purchase the high-power line from the grid, which is expected to cost some other tens of thousands.

For that matter, Nissan’s new charger (and all quick chargers from now on) will be hosted only in public places like city chargers, hotels or… gas stations.

There’s a true war between the Japanese EV manufacturers, who want to standardize their CHAdeMo and various U.S. and European manufacturers who have their own proprietary charging protocols. With its U.S. launch, Nissan’s charger may be nothing more than a (“cheap”) Trojan horse.
