Google Pulls Plug on Renewable Energy Project

Anyone knows that by trying to catch two (or more) rabbits at once you probably won’t catch any. So does Google, it seems. Larry Page, their CEO, has now decided to pull the plug on a renewable energy project once ambitious: Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal.

Maybe Page took Steve Jobs’s advice to focus on fewer activities, but excel in them and realized that Google’s mission is that of bringing better but more focused IT services instead of being the all-in-one wonder who’ll eventually save the planet.

Anyway, when the Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal project had been launched back in 2007, it aimed high: to make solar power (especially) affordable for the masses. Bill Weihl, who led the project, resigned this month, but at the time he said that “in three years, we could have multiple megawatts of plants out there.”

“To recap, we’re in the process of shutting down a number of products which haven’t had the impact we’d hoped for, integrating others as features into our broader product efforts, and ending several which have shown us a different path forward,” wrote Google Senior Vice President of Operations Urs Holzle in a blog post.

Google is not only giving up on making renewable energy better, but also on several other IT-related services it considers unsuccessful. However, the search giant still wants to diversify its energy sources and will stick to the plan of powering their datacenters with “cleaner, more efficient energy.”
