Chevy Cruze Turbo Diesel Fuel Economy Rated at 46MPG

Perhaps you may know the Chevy Volt for being a remarkably fuel-conscious vehicle. Engineers at General Motors have produced a remarkable diesel-powered vehicle with some impressive fuel economy ratings.

If you’re interested in reducing your vehicle emissions, you’ve got a lot of choices. With the introduction of hybrid electric and electric vehicle technology, you might assume that these are the only obvious choices. With the introduction of the new Chevy Cruze turbodiesel, General Motors provides proof that there is indeed plenty of innovation left in the internal combustion engine. We already know that diesel is inherently more economical to run, but the price of diesel fuel itself puts some people off.

As Ford and others have done with their gasoline engines, General Motors has cut down the size of the four-cylinder diesel engine. Obviously a 2.0ℓ engine will have better fuel economy than a larger engine, but also ends up with less power, which is especially important for getting around town and getting onto the highway.

General Motors’ next step was to boost the power with a turbocharger, which gives the driver the power needed to get up to cruising speed, 148hp and 258lb•ft worth, but once the vehicle gets up to highway speed, all that power isn’t really necessary. Reducing the engine size enables this turbodiesel to rank pretty high on the fuel economy charts, 46mpg according to the EPA estimate. The Ford Fusion Hybrid is rated at 47mpg, and is a bit more complicated with it’s hybrid electric drive system.
