Tesla Motors is the target that automakers are reaching for, judging from this recent announcement, concerning a possible Cadillac electric vehicle, from General Motors CEO Dan Akerson:

“If you want to compete head-to-head with Tesla, and we ultimately will, you want to do it with a Cadillac electric vehicle,” says General Motors CEO Dan Akerson. Considering that General Motors has a fairly rich electric-vehicle history, starting back almost twenty years with the GM EV1, with a long nap in between, I’m quite surprised that they don’t have a fully electric vehicle on the road today. They could have at least had one in the works as a response to the sudden appearance of Tesla Motors in 2008. What an answer that would have been!

In any case, General Motors has been focusing on its extended-range electric vehicle [EREV] Chevy Volt and, finally, the pure electric vehicle [EV] Chevy Spark EV. Sometime late this year or early next year, the Cadillac ELR, with the same EREV powertrain as the Chevy Volt, will be released. Word about the Cadillac ELR was that it wasn’t a stepping-stone to a pure EV, but it seems that General Motors is taking that back, and perhaps a Cadillac electric vehicle is in the works after all?

General Motors does have in the works improvements to the Chevy Volt, and therefore the Cadillac ELR, battery and electric motors, which should increase range, but rumor has it that they’re working on a 200-mile-range electric vehicle that’s going to cost in the range of $30,000. Could a new Cadillac electric vehicle be part of that plan to compete with Tesla Motors? According to Steve Girsky, General Motors vice-chairman, “Tesla Motors could be a big disruptor if we’re not careful. History is littered with big companies that ignored innovation that was coming their way.”

  1. According to Steve Girsky, General Motors vice-chairman, “History is littered with big companies that ignored innovation that was coming their way.” Much like GM ignored the innovation GM was doing with the EV1. Old GM went bankrupt by not following new GM’s lead.
