As alternative fuel and electric vehicle buffs, we always look forward to the auto show circuits, every year giving us a taste of what automakers have designed that could very well change the future of driving. Years ago, hybrid electric vehicles [HEV] first hit the scene, and now are the most fuel efficient vehicles on the road. After the first HEVs, though, the new technology has found its way into larger vehicles, including SUVs and trucks.
Electric vehicles [EV] seem like the next logical step in vehicle electrification and fuel economy, but the market still isn’t ready for it. What’s needed is an intermediate step, such as the Chevy Volt, an extended range EV that doesn’t suffer the range limits of a pure EV, such as the Nissan Leaf.
Still, the Volt doesn’t appeal to a very wide public, so General Motors [GM] is taking Volt’s EVer power-train and adapting it to a slightly larger model, the Cadillac ELR.
The Cadillac ELR has been teased on-and-off for a couple of years now, and is finally set for the official reveal at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, January 19, 2013. Based on the Cadillac Converj Concept, revealed in 2009, the new ELR will start production in 2013. A two-door EVer coupe certainly looks like a promising model, a fun to drive and highly efficient vehicle. Who says you can’t have both?
