Lampuga: World’s Fastest Electric Surfboard

Lampuga_21Lampuga is quite similar to other existing electric surfboards. Just as all the rest, it has a motor and a battery, but the main difference is in the lightweight carbon fiber/composite construction.

The hottest of the hot electric vehicles that move on water attracted hundreds in Germany at the annual boat show. Surprisingly, no fancy yacht or super fast electric boat could compete with the clear show-stopper – “the world’s fastest electric surfboard”.

When January comes, we all (in the Northern hemisphere) start dreaming of summer, no matter how much snow there is outside. We join the gym, we cut down on carbs, all that to look great on that palm beach. Of course, the dream hot surf outfit never fails to turn heads around and attract everyone’s attention. So it comes as no surprise that when a super cool, fast and extra green electric surfboard goes on display, many rush to get a sneak peek at what would bring the ultimate “awesomeness and attractiveness” this summer.

Without further ado, let me introduce to you the highlight of this year’s biggest boat show, that took place in Dusseldorf last week. Meet the e-surfboard that everyone starts dreaming about as soon as they lay eyes on it- Lampuga, the currently “fastest electric surfboard” on the market.

The Lampuga board is 8 ft 5 in (2.6 m) in length and weighs only 86 lb (39 kg). Equipped with a 52-volt lithium-ion battery, which powers a brushless synchronous motor and charges in one or two hours, depending on the charging station. With that power, the super fast Lampuga can give you up to 35 minutes of smooth surfing, reaching a maximum speed of the whooping 34 mph (55 km/h). Here is a demo video.

But it seems popularity and attention are not enough to make everyone pull out their credit cards and purchase an electric surfboard right away. Although super cool, and definitely something that many would like to have, Lampuga comes at the steep price of  €15,400 (US$17,400) and provides a very limited runtime for its money. Yes, it is great, but it seems to me a bit like the Trefecta e-bike– very sleek, very modern, lots and lots of extras, but still that little bit out of budget.

Lampuga should remain the fastest e-surfboard around for some time, until the makers of Aquila Carver manage to complete the development of their surfboard, which promises a speed of 44 mph (71 km/h). I guess if you have been hooked up already, you might want to wait a bit and see how the market will change after the new release. Who knows, the competition might actually bring down the prices a little.
