The global warming is here to stay – this is what the World Meteorological Organization said in this year’s issue of their Greenhouse Gas Bulletin. Gases like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane are at their highest since the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th century.

Carbon dioxide is actually not the most harmful greenhouse out there. It is indeed produced by humans in its largest part, but the analysis also took into account the so-called “sinks,” methods through which these gases get naturally recycled or stored. The U.N. scientists say that almost half of the carbon dioxide emitted by burning fossil fuels since 1958 has been sunk by oceans and green vegetation.

Methane emissions have also been growing during the past five years, after reaching stability between 2000 and 2006. It’s not fully understood why it behaved this way.

Nitrous oxides, however, retain 300 times more heat than carbon dioxide, and its percentage is continually rising with the use of nitrogen-based fertilizers, deeply affecting the global nitrogen cycle.

The study also mentioned HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons), which replaced CFCs for having a big effect on atmospheric warming, as having a bigger and bigger greenhouse impact as their use grows.

The U.N. urged countries to have disaster management plans for the eventual cataclysms stemming from global warming in the following decades.
