There will be drastic reductions in CO2 emissions for new cars and light commercial vehicles by 2020. The European Commission reported this news as plans were revealed to implement these proposals.

Commissioner Connie Hedegaard said this is a win-win situation for different sectors. This move will lessen greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. The automobile sector will become more innovative and competitive in designing and manufacturing more energy-efficient vehicles. It will create more jobs. Lastly, it will generate more savings for users from reduced fuel consumption.

The Commissioner added that further reduction of CO2 emissions beyond 2020 would be planned in consultation with stakeholders.

The proposed reduction for new cars will cut the average emission to 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer (g CO2/km) in 2020 from 135.7g CO2/km in 2011. There will be a mandatory target of 130g CO2/km in 2015.

Emissions for vans will be cut to 147g CO2/km in 2020 from 181.4g CO2/km in 2010. There will be a mandatory target of 175g CO2/km in 2017.

  1. Sounds like a good idea on the surface, there’s nothing like global warming to motivate change. However it will not have an impact on climate change but it might make you feel better. You have a better chance of stopping a volcanic eruption after it’s started than halting climate change.
