Pesticides or High-Fructose Corn Syrup Cause Bee Colonies Collapse?

2-honeybeeA study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science by a team from University of Illinois, found that the reason for the famous bee colony collapse disorder, and disappearance of bee families, is caused by the high-fructose corn syrup given to bees as their natural staple.

Since the 70s when feeding bees with high-fructose corn syrup became a common practice, many pesticides have been introduced to the market. Scientists have linked the weakened immunity response of bees with some of these compounds.

The team is certain that the high-fructose corn syrup, given to bees instead of honey, is not toxic. They even claim that by feeding them with it, bees are less likely to be exposed to chemicals found in the commercial pesticides.

However, by taking away honey so that it can be sold, bee-keepers compromise bees’ immune systems, and make them much more vulnerable to pesticides.

Campaigners have been lobbying against pesticides for years, and finally their pleads to save the bees have been heard.

The Independent released an article today, stating that European politicians have voted a two-year ban on pesticides used on plants that attract bees. This decision has been based on a great number of independent studies, showing that pesticides are responsible for the disturbance of bee colonies.

The ban will be fully implemented in December, regardless of numerous complains from pesticide producers. The great anticipation now is to see whether bee populations will be able to recover.

Editor’s note: Albert Einstein himself is said to have said that if we have no bees, humanity will disappear in 4 years. I don’t know if Einstein really said that, but I think the fact is not far from the truth. If there would be no pollination going on between plants, then the entire ecosystem would eventually collapse.

  1. i-sis-org has a wee interesting article on formaldehyde levels in GM corn-add that to the non degradable synthetic nicotine pesticide residues(patentable though, unlike tobbacco juice sprays, used for thousands of years-which do break down.).Then factor in the Hog killing(starlink-pre1998thru2002)insecticlde gm Bt corn-whose wind blown pollen is still with us.Which brings us too the point that corn syrup has none of the vits and compounds that bees rely on to keep the hive healthy.Even beet sugars are deadly now with unlabeled herbicide GM mods and residues.Einstein was optumistic, much further down this path from where we already are,and the last of us will be eating the almost last in less than 2 years.
Cheers-ps;GMwatch covers these matters very well.
