Profits Over Environment for Fast Food Companies

Fast Food Companies and the EnvironmentFast food companies are caught on a slippery slope. They know they need to get their act together to make a concerted commitment to limiting their impact on the environment – if for no other reason than as a great public relations event – but they are beholden to the mass-produced beef and palm oil that go into nearly everything they sell. This results in a vicious cycle of global deforestation.

Enter the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), an objective entity that assessed the top fast food companies’ efforts to tackle head on the deforestation that’s occurring due to the demand for palm oil. The UCS discovered that of the 10 companies examined, only four had palm oil commitments, and only Subway and McDonald’s had done well enough to even place on the chart.

But how the two fast food giants scored is nothing to brag about. McDonald’s ranked as having “little commitment” and Subway was ranked as having “some commitment.”

The companies that received “no commitment” were Dairy Queen, Burger King, Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, Wendy’s, and the Yum! Group (which includes KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut).

The UCS acknowledges that most of these companies aren’t going to take much action at all unless consumers demand it and asks consumers to weigh in and let the companies know that addressing the issue and ethical sourcing matters.
