Chicken Waste Biofuel to Power Future Mazda Diesel Engines


mazda-powered-by-chicken-fatThe new Mazda 6 “clean diesel” sedan will be displayed at the “Daytona International Speedway’s Rolex 24 endurance race”, which will take place next week. The makers have prepared to show three high-performance racing versions of the car, which run on specially made by the company ‘Dynamic Fuels’ renewable, synthetic diesel.

The secret of Dynamic Fuels is hidden in their partnership with the giant in chicken products ‘Tyson Foods’, as well as ‘Syntroleum’, a maker of synthetic liquid fuels from nonrenewable feedstocks.

The dream team joined forces to build a new synthetic diesel venture with a facility that can process various semi-solid feedstocks, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The byproducts that come out of the process are Naphtha, a.k.a liquid fuel, and liquid petroleum gas.

The core ingredient is of course the feedstock, which is provided by Tyson’s. Surprisingly to many, it is chicken waste, which otherwise goes to landfills.

Dynamic fuels is proud to announce that they can make use of a large range of wastes from chicken fat, inedible fats from pork and beef, to recycled cooking oil and fat recovered from washwater during beef processing.

To produce the fuel, Dynamic Fuels implemented a method that results in the making of the exact same molecule that is usually derived from petroleum, but the liquid does not have odour or colour.

The process is very similar to petroleum refining, where oxygen is removed from the finished product through hydrotreatment. Because synthetic diesel does not contain oxygen, it performs better than conventional biodiesel, especially in cold weather.

The feedstock is first broken in molecules, or triglycerides, at the oxygen atom, which through a catalytic reaction with hydrogen forms water, propane and paraffin. To prevent solidification of the product, the carbon atoms are then rearranged.

Another benefit of the synthetic fuel is that storage and transportation do not require any special changes and adjustments in existing fuel infrastructure and vehicles engines.

One more surprise will be provided by Mazda at the event. They are planning to show off their new SKYACTIV-D diesel engine, which cuts down black carbon and provides a 20 percent increase in fuel efficiency.
