If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to own and drive an electric vehicle, and you happen to live on the West Coast, then the May 2014 Electric Car Guest Drive (ECGD) ought to be your next stop.
Of course, you could take a test drive at a dealership that also sells electric cars, but there’s a lot of pressure at the dealership, sometimes even pushing away from buying an electric vehicle. Another option might be looking up a rental car company, which would certainly get rid of the pressure aspect of taking a test drive, but many rental companies are still on the fence about offering electric vehicles in their rental fleets. Finding a no-pressure way to take an electric car test drive could be difficult, especially if you’re like me, because I can’t stand salesmen hovering over me.
The West Coast Electric Car Guest Drive, taking place across a dozen cities in California, starts this weekend, May 3, and runs through June 1, 2014. The ECGD is put on by the EV Quorum club, and club members can attend, free of charge, to experience driving an electric vehicle in a meet-up atmosphere. Electric vehicles great and small will be there, including the Ford Focus Electric, Fiat 500e, Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf, Smart Fortwo ED, and Tesla Model S, as well as a few others. The really great thing about the ECGD is that this isn’t a ride-along event, but a test-drive event, which means that club members get to drive the cars themselves, to see how they perform.
Adding to the no-pressure atmosphere of the West Coast Electric Car Guest Drive is the fact that you can get your questions answered by the owners of the electric vehicles, instead of listening to prepared speeches or excessive pomp.
