Toshiba recently unveiled one of their master batteries used for mobile phones. They have presented a direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC) battery which can be easily charged in just a few seconds. The designed cell phone battery is able to guarantee approximately 6 hours of conversation while normal cell phone batteries have a range of 3 to 4 hours. With a 50ml methanol cartridge and about 15 refills possible, one of the records that this battery establishes is the 13 days of standby.
For Toshiba this is not the first liquid fuel cell battery. Their demo device powered a Gigabeat media player. The battery has 22 x 56 x 4.5mm (maximum of 9.1mm, for the fuel tank). The latest prototype from Toshiba has only 8.5g and can be easily integrated into a wireless headset for mobile phones or can be used to power an MP3 player for at least 20 hours on a single charge of highly concentrated methanol.
Toshiba did not reveal the capacity of the DMFC yet. As well, safety precautions are probably still under investigation, but for sure Toshiba will find a way to manage all existing problems until the market release.
