UK farmers are convinced that genetic modification of food crops might be the solution to better adaptation to climate change.
Drought and flood-resistant crops would be the solution to the increasing losses as a result of extreme weather conditions.
This statement was made at the Oxford Farming Conference by Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers’ Union, for The Guardian. The year 2012 was the wettest in UK history causing a massive drop in agricultural production.
Although environmentalists warned that GMOs will not boost production, farmers are worried they will lose their global competitiveness.
Kendall pointed out that by using GMOs, farmers would limit the food waste. Many supported his view, stating that if climate change continues as predicted by scientists, such solutions should be considered.
A possible move towards GM foods, should be very slow, according to Andrew Brown, a farmer from Rutland, and it will require public support and acceptance.
Many major retailers are not planning to incorporate GM foods in their brands, mainly due to lack of consumers enthusiasm. They are certain that unless there is a demand by consumers, such crops and products would not be sold in the market chains.
