A new and innovative CO2 capturing system is to be installed in Norway, at a Norcem cement producing plant in Brevik. Developed by Aker Solutions, the carbon capturing system is the first in the world to do this at a cement station.

While most of today’s efforts only focus on capturing emissions resulted from coal-fired power plants, cement production accounts for 5 percent of the world’s total carbon dioxide emissions.

Most of the emission come from the processing of limestone, which releases carbon dioxide as it is heated. Furthermore, emissions also come from burning fossil fuels to provide the actual heat necessary to limestone production.

“The award … marks the first time technology to capture carbon dioxide is used at a cement production plant,” Aker Solutions said in a statement, quoted by Reuters.

Aker Solutions’ current pilot project will be used to gather experience on this task to successfully apply it on other limestone-processing plants around Europe and the world.
