Ford has recently announced a collaboration with San Jose-based solar panel vendor SunPower in order to offer a 2.5-kilowatt rooftop solar system to people who buy the upcoming Ford Focus Electric.

The package deal that includes the 2012 Ford Focus Electric and the solar panels, installed by SunPower in the customer’s home, costs around $10,000. According to Ford, SunPower’s E18 series solar panels are capable of generating about 3,000 kWh of energy a year, letting the customer drive some 1,000 miles per month powered solely by the sun.

The solar system consists of 11 panels that will be installed on an area of 147 square feet. The SunPower systems are backed by a 25-year warranty.

Besides this, the solar equipment package comes with a software that allows him to check the solar panels’ performance online, using an iPhone or Web app.

“Under the ‘Drive Green for Life‘ program, Focus Electric owners can reduce their total cost of ownership by generating enough energy from their high efficiency SunPower rooftop solar system to offset the electricity required to charge the vehicle at night,” said Mike Tinskey, Ford director of Global Vehicle Electrification and Infrastructure.
